Third JPC Anti-drug Day to keep up fight against drug (with photo)
************************************************************

The third "JPC Territory-wide Anti-drug Day" featuring a series of publicity and educational events were held today (June 26), demonstrating the sustained efforts of Junior Police Call (JPC) members to fight against drug.

With their active participation in seminars, distribution of leaflets, visits as well as roving exhibitions and a programme of activities to be organised in the next few weeks, it is hoped that the promotion of anti-drug messages to youngsters can be enhanced throughout the summer holiday.

60 JPC members led by Western District Commander, Mr Sham Wai-kin, visited the Drug InfoCentre to get a better understanding of the harmful effects of taking drugs.

They also appreciated the winning entries of the Large Anti-drug Publicity Board Design Competition organised by Western District last September at a roving exhibition being staged at the Drug InfoCentre until July 12, which helped disseminate anti-youth drug abuse messages in an artistic way.

Border District Commander, Mr Leung King-hang, joined by Chairman of Action Committee Against Narcotics, Prof Daniel Shek Tan-lei, district personnels and JPC leaders, kicked off the "Border District Anti-drug Initiatives" for the summer vacation, at a ceremony held at the Departure Hall of Lok Ma Chau Border Control Point (BCP).

Under the programme, apart from activities like slogan and bookmark design competition, distribution of leaflet and day camping, counters manned by staff of non-governmental organisations will be set up at BCPs to provide counselling service on drug problem during the summer holiday. Joint enforcement actions with the Customs and Excise Department to combat cross-border drug trafficking will also be stepped up.

A Police spokesman said:"We are determined to tackle the drug abuse problem, in particular placing the focus on youth. During the summer holiday, our dual approach of publicity and enforcement will continue to reinforce the anti-drug messages."

"We would like to appeal to all young people to stay away from drugs and make good use of the summer holiday to better equip themselves and participate in healthy activities."

Supported by the Beat Drugs Fund and launched last December, the "JPC Territory-wide Anti-drug Day" two-year campaign aims to reinforce anti-drug education and publicity among youngsters and to raise public awareness on the problem of youth drug abuse.
