Government announces appointment to Steering Committee for Research Themes under the Research Endowment Fund
***********************************************************

The Government today (June 26) announced that the Chief Secretary for Administration has appointed the following persons to the Steering Committee for Research Themes under the Research Endowment Fund:

- Dr York Liao (Chairman)
- Professor Joseph Lee Hun-wei
- Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing
- Professor Richard Wong Yue-chim
- Mrs Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee
- Mr Frederick Lam Tin-fuk
- Mr Kwok Kwok-chuen

The $18 billion Research Endowment Fund was formally established in March 2009.  Investment income on up to $4 billion of the principal will be set aside to support theme-based research, thus allowing University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded institutions to work on research proposals on themes of a more long-term nature and strategically beneficial to the development of Hong Kong.

The steering committee is set up to advise the Government on the selection of appropriate themes.  All members are appointed for a term of three years from July 1, 2009, to June 30, 2012.

In welcoming the appointment, the Secretary for Education, Mr Michael Suen, said, "We expect that the introduction of theme-based research funding will help the UGC-funded institutions to build up research capacity on a more focused and sustained basis to serve the long term interests of Hong Kong. I am confident that the steering committee will help identify strategic themes that can meet the changing needs of the community."
