The Islands District Office, Islands District Council, Hong Kong Outlying Islands Women's Association and Cheung Chau Island Women's Association held a home visit campaign in Cheung Chau today (June 24) to promote health messages to fishermen and boat dwellers in the district and enhance the cleanliness of the fishing community.

The Islands Assistant District Officer, Mr Wong Chun-to, and the Chairman of the Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries and Environmental Hygiene Committee of Islands District Council, Ms Lee Kwai-chun, together with volunteers and representatives from the organisers, visited about 200 households of fishermen and boat dwellers in the typhoon shelter of Cheung Chau. Disinfectant packs and pamphlets were distributed to urge them to maintain good personal, household and environmental hygiene, and help control the spread of human swine influenza in the community.

An Islands District Office spokesman said, "Most of the Cheung Chau fishermen have returned to Hong Kong during the fishing moratorium period. It is hoped that today's home visit campaign can enhance the awareness of disease prevention among the fishermen who might not have been able to access information on the disease when they were away for fishing."

As part of the half-year-long home visit and cleaning programme of the Islands District, the event aimed to disseminate the messages of "Clean Hong Kong" to different sectors in the district and show the communityˇ¦s care for people in need.

On July 7, the Islands District Office will distribute disinfectant packs and promotional brochures to residents at the cleaning operation cum carnival organised by the Hong Kong Fishermen's Association at Tai Chung River to further promote district cleanliness.
