"The Percussion World of Ronald Chin" will be presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in August. Chin and the Hong Kong Drum Ensemble will perform more than 10 works of percussion, taking the audience on an extraordinary musical journey.
Chin is a veteran performer of both Chinese and Western percussion instruments. He studied percussion and composition theory under Ho Man-chuen and Yim Hok-man. He joined the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in 1989 and is currently Assistant Percussion Principal. In 1998, he founded the Hong Kong Drum Ensemble to promote Chinese drum music and participate in community and charity events. In 2008, he was presented the award for Outstanding Young Artist by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons by the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong.
Chin has represented Hong Kong in performance tours and academic exchanges around the world. In 1996, he was invited by the Percussive Arts Society to give a solo performance to critical acclaim. Since 2000, Chin has been included in the "Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century" published by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge University.
The fascinating programme includes a variety of percussion performances such as a dagu solo, multi-percussion solo, drum music of Xi'an and a drum duet. The concert also features the drum ensemble work by Chin "Drumtasia", a newly commissioned work by Chen Ning-chi "Echoes of A Long Lost Past", Richard Tsang's "Wu C'ang" (Ever-changing) (solo version), Li Minxiong's "Drumming Up Dragons" and a collaborative work by the Jiangzhou Drum Troupe "Prince of Qin Inspecting His Army".
"The Percussion World of Ronald Chin" will be at 8pm on August 4 (Tuesday), at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $180 and $120 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. (Limited tickets for Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.)
