KWH staff confirmed with human swine influenza
**********************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) made the following announcement today (June 22) regarding the confirmed case of human swine influenza (HSI) of a member of the clerical staff in the registration office of the Accident and Emergency Department:

The clerical staff developed runny nose, sore throat, cough and myalgia on June 21 and attended the KWH Accident and Emergency Department for treatment.  She was given sick leave after treatment.  Initial laboratory tests indicated the patient was positive for HSI. Subsequent test conducted by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) confirmed the case today.  As instructed by the CHP, the staff member was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) for isolation treatment.  She is now in stable condition. The staff had no travel history in the past seven days.  It was noted that one of her family members was earlier confirmed as an HSI patient and admitted to QEH for isolation treatment.

The staff member concerned did not have close contact with any patients as there is a glass panel in the A&E registration office.  She and five other staff members in the office wore surgical masks when they were on duty as required under the Hospital Authority Infection Control Guidelines.  KWH is now following up with other staff members who are working in the registration office.  They are advised to seek medical attention at a Designated Flu Clinic or the KWH Accident and Emergency Department if they develop any respiratory symptoms.  So far there is no reported case from the registration office of staff with influenza-like symptoms.

Environmental cleaning and disinfection were carried out immediately after confirmation of the case.  Staff have been reminded to observe good personal hygiene. KWH will continue to strictly follow the Hospital Authority Infection Control Guidelines and hygiene for patients and staff.  KWH has also informed the CHP for necessary follow-up action.
