The Sha Tin District Office and Sha Tin District Council (STDC) held a large scale publicity event in support of the "Clean Hong Kong Campaign" at Yiu On Estate, Ma On Shan, today (June 13), attracting a large crowd of residents and representatives from local organisations.
Jointly organised with the owner's corporation of Yiu On Estate and The Link Management Limited, the event aimed to disseminate health messages to residents and promote public participation in the fight against the influenza pandemic.
At a seminar, a medical adviser from Sha Tin Women's Association explained the symptoms of human swine influenza and how to prevent infection, while volunteers from the association acted in a drama to remind citizens of the importance of household and community hygiene. The event was well-received by participants with keen responses in the health quiz.
The event was officiated by Sha Tin District Officer Mrs Do Pang Wai-yee, STDC Chairman Mr Wai Kwok-hung, STDC members and representatives of the co-organisers. After the ceremony, the officiating guests proceeded to Yiu On Market to take part in a cleaning operation and distribute disinfectant packs to the stall operators and residents.
Mrs Do said, "Observing community, household and personal hygiene is the most effective way to guard against human swine influenza. I hope all sectors of the district will continue to support the 'Clean Hong Kong Campaign' and work together in building a healthy community.
"To better serve the single elderly residents in our community, we will kick off a household cleaning campaign on June 18 with local welfare organisations. We will visit single elderly residents in public housing estates to help clean their flats and remind them of the importance of observing hygiene," she added.
Mr Wai said, "The STDC will render full support to the Government¡¦s health measures and continue to collaborate with the Sha Tin District Office to organise various cleaning and promotional events to enhance community cleanliness."
