Drugs seized at Tai Lam Centre for Women
****************************************

The Correctional Services Department (CSD) is committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody, a spokesperson of the department said today (June 4).

Every measure was taken by the CSD to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into, and eradicate their presence in, correctional institutions, the spokesperson said.

The comments followed the case of dangerous drugs being swallowed by a remand who later discharged them in her stool.

Surnamed Fung, the 53-year-old remand prisoner was admitted to Tai Lam Centre for Women on June 2 on a charge of trafficking in a dangerous drug.

Acting on information that Fung might have swallowed some drugs before her admission, CSD officers put her in an isolation cell for close observation.

A total of 12 tablets of suspected heroin wrapped in plastic sheets were discharged in Fung's stool this morning.

The CSD is investigating whether Fung is still concealing more dangerous drugs. The case has been reported to Police.

There were 93 seizures of dangerous drugs last year (2008) and 55 this year up to April 30, with the seizures mainly in the reception centres.
