Contractor fined for violation of safety rule

     Sui Chong Construction & Engineering Company Limited was fined $50,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (June 1) for violation of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on February 4 last year at a construction site in Stonecutters Island. A worker fell to his death from the edge of a trench when he was repairing a hose.

     According to Regulation 38B(1) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor shall take adequate steps to prevent a person from falling from a height of two metres or more. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.

     According to Regulation 38A(2) of the Construction Sites (Safety)
Regulations, the contractor shall ensure that, so far as is reasonably
practicable, suitable and adequate safe access to and egress from a place of work is provided and properly maintained. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
