Appointments to SFC Advisory Committee

     The Financial Secretary has re-appointed seven members and appointed five new members to the Advisory Committee of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) with effect from next Monday (June 1) and up to May 31, 2011.

     The appointments were made pursuant to the Securities and Futures Ordinance (SFO) and under the authority delegated by the Chief Executive.

     The following are the re-appointed members:

* Mr Henry Chan
Managing Director, Sanfull Securities Limited;

* Mr Chew Fook-aun
Executive Director and Group Chief Financial Officer, Esprit Holdings Limited;

* Mr Douglas Eu
Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific, Allianz Global Investors Asia Pacific GmbH;

* Dr Fred Zuliu Hu
Managing Director and Chairman of Greater China, Goldman Sachs (Asia) L.L.C.;

* Mr Wong Kwai-lam
Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Asia Coverage, Merrill Lynch (Asia Pacific) Ltd;

* Mr David S. Y. Wong
Chairman, Dah Sing Financial Holdings Ltd; and

* Mr Thomas J. Wu
Co-Managing Director, Hopewell Holdings Limited.

     The new appointees are:

* Mr Henry Cheong Ying Chew
Director, WAG Worldsec Corporate Finance Limited;

* Mr Mark Dickens
Head, Listing Division, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited;

* Dr Fu Yuning
Director and President, China Merchants Group Limited;

* Mrs Margaret Leung
Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive, Hang Seng Bank; and

* Dr Lin Yong
Chief Executive Officer, Hai Tong (HK) Financial Holdings Ltd.

     Announcing the appointments today (May 29), a government spokesman said, "The Advisory Committee of the SFC comprises representatives from a wide array of professions.  They provide independent and impartial advice to the SFC on policy and market development matters.

     "The above appointed members come from diverse backgrounds and have operational experience in both Mainland and Hong Kong financial markets and business sectors.  We are confident that they will provide professional and invaluable advice to the SFC," the spokesman added.

     The spokesman also thanked the retiring members of the Advisory Committee of the SFC - Mr Blair Pickerell, Mr Jack Maisano, Ms Ada Tse, Mr Yip Lai-shing and Mr Christophe Lee - for their valuable advice and contribution to the SFC in past years.

     Established under the SFO, the SFC is an independent statutory body responsible for regulating the securities and futures markets in Hong Kong.  The Advisory Committee of the SFC was established under section 7 of the SFO to advise the SFC on policy matters regarding its regulatory objectives and functions.

     Apart from government appointees, the Advisory Committee also includes the Chairman, the Chief Executive Officer and two Executive Directors of the SFC.
