CE's statement on Liaison Office appointment

     On the State Council's appointment of Mr Peng Qinghua to take over Mr Gao Siren as the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (the Liaison Office), the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, issued the following statement today (May 25):

     The Liaison Office, under the leadership of Mr Gao, has been actively supporting the work of the HKSAR Government in accordance with the Basic Law. The Liaison Office has spared no efforts in fostering a close relationship between the Mainland and Hong Kong in various aspects, as well as exploring opportunities for cooperation in different areas.

     On behalf of the HKSAR Government, I thank Mr Gao for his significant contribution to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. I wish Mr Gao every success in his posts as member of the Standing Committee of the National Peopleˇ¦s Congress (NPC) and Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee of NPC, and I also wish him and his family good health and happiness.

     I would like to extend a warm welcome to Mr Peng to his new post. Mr Peng has been serving in the Liaison Office in Hong Kong since 2003.  I am impressed by his tireless efforts in working with the HKSAR Government to promote exchanges and communication between the Mainland and Hong Kong. I believe that, under the leadership of Mr Peng, the Liaison Office will continue to support the work of the HKSAR Government in accordance with the Basic Law and the ˇ§One Country, Two Systemsˇ¨ principle, to help maintain and contribute to Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.
