********************************************

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, visited Kwai Tsing district today (May 22) to meet staff of the Family and Child Protective Services Unit of the Tsuen Wan/Kwai Tsing District Social Welfare Office and Kwai Chung (West) Integrated Family Service Centre to learn more about their work.

"The Government attaches great importance to family and child welfare. A total of $1.785 billion has been allocated for this area this financial year, representing a 12.6% increase over that of last year. The allocation accounts for 4.6% of the total expenditure of the Social Welfare Department," Mr Cheung said.

"This includes an additional $13 million recurrent funding, and from then on a total of $24.5 million every year, to enhance support services for victims of domestic violence. These services include increasing the manpower of the family and child protective services units and clinical psychology units, further developing the batterer intervention programme and strengthening our support for refuge centres and crisis centres.

"In addition to closely monitoring the situation of the service units and integrated family service centres, we will continue to step up training for frontline professional staff, and give top priority to increasing the manpower of districts in which domestic violence is more serious," he said.

Accompanied by District Officer (Kwai Tsing) Mr Allan Chow Shou-shun and District Welfare Officer (Tsuen Wan/Kwai Tsing) Mr Peter Ng Ka-him, Mr Cheung also visited the Federation of Trade Unions' office where he met staff members measuring blood pressure for elders, and discussed with some young people how the Government could help with their employment under the current economic situation.

The last leg of his tour was a tea gathering with the Chairman of Kwai Tsing District Council, Mr Tang Kwok-kong, and other District Council members. Mr Cheung listened to their views on a wide range of issues of concern relating to the residents' livelihoods.

"It is a useful visit that helps me get a better grasp of the latest situation of the district and issues of concern. I value the chance of meeting local residents, community leaders and District Council members and listening to their views. I would like to thank the district offices and organisations for doing a great job,กจ Mr Cheung said.
