Sham Shui Po District launches cleaning activity in private old buildings (with photo)
************************************************************

To help prevent the spread of human swine influenza and tie in with the Clean Hong Kong Campaign, the Sham Shui Po District Office, Sham Shui Po District Council's Environment and Hygiene Committee and Working Group for a Healthy and Safe Community organised the "Sham Shui Po District Private Old Buildings Cleaning Activity" to enhance community cleanliness.  The activity was launched today (May 15) in Cheung Sha Wan.

In the "Sham Shui Po District Private Old Buildings Cleaning Activity", which will last till June 4, Cleaning Ambassadors will help clean the common areas of some 200 private old buildings in the district which do not have any management bodies.  The activity resonates with the message delivered on Clean Hong Kong Day that the government would join with District Councils and local organisations to maintain a clean and healthy environment in the fight against infectious diseases.

District Officer (Sham Shui Po), Ms May Chan, Chairman of Sham Shui Po District Council, Mr Chan Tung, Chairman of the Working Group of Healthy and Safe Community, Mr Wong Kam-kuen, and other guests demonstrated the proper way of washing hands and showed their support for the Cleaning Ambassadors in the launch ceremony.  After the ceremony, they inspected the cleaning activities in a building in Wing Lung Street and distributed anti-flu gift packs to the residents.

Ms Chan said, "Maintaining the cleanliness of buildings' common areas is important in the overall fight against human swine influenza.  The District Office will continue to work closely with the District Council, community organisations and related government departments to carry out cleaning activities in the community.  Public participation is also the key to the fight against the infectious disease."

Mr Chan said, "Cleaning activities can help improve hygienic conditions of private old buildings, and remind residents of the importance of cleanliness of their living environment.  The campaign's success depends on residents' support."
