********************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today (May 12) announced the start of the 2009 Annual Earnings and Hours Survey and appealed to establishments selected to participate in the survey to cooperate by providing the required information.

The earnings and hours survey is conducted under Part IIIA of the Census and Statistics Ordinance (Cap. 316).  Its objective is to collect detailed wage, employment and demographic information of employees in Hong Kong, so as to provide comprehensive data on the level and distribution of wages of employees in Hong Kong, as well as their employment details and demographic profiles.  In order to enhance the precision and representativeness of the survey results, some 10 000 establishments of different industries and different employment sizes are randomly selected to take part in the survey.

Questionnaires will be sent by mail to the sampled establishments.  Census officers of the C&SD will contact individual establishments to offer assistance in completing the questionnaires.  These officers will each carry a Government Identity Card and a certificate for conducting the survey, which are available for inspection.

Enquiries regarding the survey can be directed to the Wages and Labour Costs Statistics Section (2) at 3105 2138.
