The Government announced today (May 8) the appointment of Dr Lee Boon-ying to succeed Mr Lam Chiu-ying as Director of the Hong Kong Observatory with effect from May 11. Mr Lam proceeded on pre-retirement leave on April 6 after 35 years of service with the Government.
Commenting on Dr Lee's appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue, said, "Dr Lee has extensive knowledge on the operation of the Hong Kong Observatory, as well as proven administrative and leadership skills. I am confident that he will be able to lead the department to meet the challenges ahead, including the continued delivery of quality service to the community that matches the needs of our time."
On the retirement of Mr Lam Chiu-ying, Miss Yue said, "With his professionalism and dedication, Mr Lam devoted sustained efforts in leading the observatory and its staff to enhance service quality and operational efficiency. He also contributed significantly to promoting public understanding of science. Under his leadership, the department has won many awards, both local and overseas, and is highly regarded by its counterparts around the world. I sincerely wish him a happy retirement."
Brief biographical notes on Mr Lam and Dr Lee are set out below:
Mr Lam Chiu-ying

Aged 59, Mr Lam joined the Government as a Scientific Officer in May 1974. He was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer in October 1980 and to Assistant Director in July 1992. He has been Director of the Hong Kong Observatory since March 2003.
Dr Lee Boon-ying
----------------
Aged 58, Dr Lee joined the Government as a Scientific Officer in August 1979. He was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer in January 1988 and to Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory in November 2000.
