Government welcomes setting up of Ma Wan Park Advisory Committee

     The Government today (May 4) welcomes the setting up of the Ma Wan Park Advisory Committee by Ma Wan Park Limited to advise on the operation, maintenance and management of the MWP.

     A spokesman for the Development Bureau said that the setting up of the Ma Wan Park Advisory Committee was a result of mutual discussion between the Government and the developer of Ma Wan Park ˇV Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited with an aim to involving the public in the management of the Ma Wan Park and advising on its ongoing operation.

     The Ma Wan Park is a publicly-funded facility to be built and operated by the developer according to an agreement signed between the Government and the developer in 1997.  The ˇ§Nature Gardenˇ¨ and the ˇ§Noahˇ¦s Arkˇ¨, providing a wide range of educational and recreational facilities, have already been opened.  The Government attaches great importance to managing the Ma Wan Park well for public enjoyment.  As such, the Government and the developer agree to the setting up of an Advisory Committee to advise on its operation, maintenance and management.

     The Advisory Committee consists of 10 members.  Four of them are nominated by the Government; two of them are nominated jointly by the Government and the developer; while the other four members are nominated by the developer.  All the members are appointed by the Ma Wan Park Limited for the period between May 1, 2009 and April 30, 2012.

     The two members jointly nominated by the Government and the developer are Mr Moses Cheng Mo-shi and Professor Richard Wong Yue-chim.  Mr Cheng is the Chairman of the Advisory Committee.

     The four members nominated by the Government are Chairman of the Tsuen Wan District Council, Mr Chau How-chen; Chairman of the Kwai Tsing District Council, Mr Tang Kwok-kong; Chairman of Ma Wan Rural Committee, Mr Chan Sung-ip; and Senior Manager (Product Development) of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Mr Mason Hung.

     "With outstanding achievements in the legal and economic sectors, the two members jointly nominated by the Government and the developer should be able to bring their expertise and valuable experiences to the Advisory Committee.  

     "The four Government-nominated members come from the respective District Councils, the community and the organisation responsible for promoting Hong Kong tourism.  We believe that they could reflect the views of the local residents to the Advisory Committee and share with the Committee their valuable views in promoting tourism.  All these would contribute to enhancing the characteristics of Ma Wan Park and to providing a variety of activities in the Park," the spokesman said.

     The membership List of the Ma Wan Park Advisory Committee is as follows:

Four members nominated by the Government:
1. Chairman of Tsuen Wan District Council, Mr Chau How-chen
2. Chairman of Kwai Tsing District Council, Mr Tang Kwok-kong
3. Chairman of Ma Wan Rural Committee, Mr Chan Sung-ip
4. Senior Manager (Product Development) of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Mr Mason Hung

     Four members nominated by the developer
1. Non-Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Mr Li Ka-cheung
2. Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Mr Chan Kui-yuen
3. Manager of the Construction Department of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Mr Tsoi Siu-ho
4. Director of Public Affairs of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Mr Lee Luen-fai

     Two members jointly nominated by the Government and Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited
1. Senior Partner of P.C. Woo & Co, Mr Moses Cheng Mo-chi
2. Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of University of Hong Kong/Independent Non-Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited, Professor Richard Wong Yue-chim

     The first meeting of the Advisory Committee was held today to ascertain the terms of reference of the Committee and discuss the development of Ma Wan Park and the operational arrangement of Ma Wan Park Phase I.
