The festive Bun Scrambling Competition, the finale of the Bun Carnival 2009, was completed successfully early this morning (May 3) at the soccer pitch of Pak Tai Temple Playground on Cheung Chau.
After an exciting competition, the championship went to Ho Sin-fai, who scored 1,038 marks. The first runner-up, Choi Kwok-tung, scored 822 marks. The second runner-up went to Heung Yiu, who scored 726 marks.
The Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, launched the competition by hitting a gong. The 10 male and two female finalists climbed the 14-metre-tall bun tower and had three minutes to snatch as many buns for the highest scores.
Divided into three zones, the bun tower was studded with buns, from the top to the bottom, representing nine, three and one marks. The buns had special colour stamps on the bottoms for identification. The contestant who scored the highest marks from all the buns grabbed was the champion.
Teams from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Macau competed in the Invitation Relay against teams from Cheung Chau. Two members of each team had to get specified buns on the bun tower in relay in the shortest time. Guangzhou Team won the championship in 1 minute and 53.08 seconds while Shenzhen Mountaineering and Outdoorsports Association was the first runner-up in a time of 2 minutes and 0.36 second. The second runner-up, Spirit Sports Association, took 2 minutes and 0.96 second to finish the race.
Organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Bun Scrambling Competition received support from the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, Cheung Chau Rural Committee, Islands District Office of the Home Affairs Department and the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and sponsored by the Islands District Council and Lukfook Jewellery.
The final attracted 1,500 spectators.
