New measures to control salicylates
***********************************

The Registration Committee of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board today reviewed the use of pharmaceutical products containing salicylates in Hong Kong and decided to introduce appropriate warnings on the labels of these products to further protect childrenˇ¦s health, a spokesman for the Department of Health said today (April 27).

The review was made in view of the call for tighter control of this kind of drug in Hong Kong as salicylate was chemically similar to aspirin, a drug which has been linked to Reyeˇ¦s syndrome, a rare but serious condition usually associated with children, the spokesman said.

Under the new arrangements, the relevant drug registration holders would be required to include the following statement on the labels of the products concerned, the spokesman said.

"Keep out of reach of children.  This medicine should not be given to children under 16 except on medical advice".
