People will have a chance to climb the famous bun tower in the "Climbing Carnival" of the "2009 Bun Carnival", which will run from noon to 6pm tomorrow (April 26) at the Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground.
By making on-site applications for the bun tower climbing challenge, people will be able to enjoy the fun and excitement of climbing the 14-metre tall tower which will be used in the Bun Scrambling Competition.
The bun tower climbing challenge is divided into three groups - the Master Group (aged 35 or above), Adult Group (aged 18 to 34) and Youth Group (aged below 18 and at least one metre tall). The challenge has four sessions, with each session lasting for an hour. Participants of the three groups in each session who reach the designated height on the bun tower in the shortest time will be the winners. Souvenirs will be awarded to the winners in each session.
Five teams representing public services organisations will compete in the invitation relay. The team finishing the competition in the shortest time will be the winner.
The carnival also offers lots of other festive programmes. People can make wishes on the "Wishing Bun Tower". There will also be games stalls featuring the bun festival, climbing sport and East Asian Games, handicrafts demonstration and variety shows. People can also enjoy the climbing demonstrations given by the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union. By joining the carnival, people will have the chance to get special souvenirs featuring the buns.
The 2009 Bun Carnival is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Cheung Chau Bun Festival Committee and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and is co-organised by the Cheung Chau Wai Chiu County Association Limited, Cheung Chau Rural Committee, Islands District Office of the Home Affairs Department and Hong Kong Mountaineering Union, and sponsored by the Islands District Council and Lukfook Jewellery.
A total of 12 shortlisted finalists will compete in the Bun Scrambling Competition to be held from 11.30pm on May 2 to 12.40am on May 3 at the Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground soccer pitch. Competitors have to scramble for the buns on the bun tower within a time limit. The one with the highest total score is the winner.
