Corporate awards for outstanding volunteer services

     The Steering Committee on the Promotion of Volunteer Service of the Social Welfare Department today (April 24) presented awards to eight companies in appreciation of their outstanding volunteer services.

     Officiating at the 2009 Corporate Volunteering Sharing Session and 2007-08 Best Corporate Volunteer Service Project Competition Award Presentation Ceremony were the Deputy Director of Social Welfare (Services), Mr Fung Pak-yan, and the Convener of the Sub-Committee on Promotion of Corporate Volunteering, Mr Herman Hui.

     Also present were about 400 participants from various sectors, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and representatives from Guangdong Province. They also took the opportunity to share and update their knowledge and experience as well as the latest developments in the areas of corporate volunteering.

     The awardees of the Best Corporate Volunteer Service Project Competition 2007-08 are as follows:

     Certificates were also presented to 20 graduates of the 4th Corporate Volunteer Training Course and 49 companies which had provided 10,000 hours of volunteer service in 2007.

     In a sharing session, NGOs were invited to share their invaluable experience to serve the people in need in collaboration with companies, including Assistant Community Service Secretary (Youth & Family) of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Mr Ivan Yiu Tze-leung on "Corporate Participation in Counteracting Poverty"; Social Work Supervisor of Hong Kong Children and Youth Services, Mr Kent Lam on "Assisting and Promoting Youth Employment"; and Project Co-ordinator and Project Officer of Caritas Hong Kong, Ms Monica Li and Miss Tammy Choi on "How Corporates Help Those with Mental Distress Reintegrate into the Community".

     A tea gathering and service exposition were also organised to foster the collaboration between corporate volunteer teams and NGOs providing social services.

     The Steering Committee on the Promotion of Volunteer Service has been promoting "Volunteer Movement" since 1998. The Sub-Committee on Promotion of Corporate Volunteering was later set up to encourage corporations to take part in volunteer service to help those in need, with a view to fostering a harmonious society in Hong Kong. As at March 31, the steering committee had registered more than 800,000 volunteers and 1,903 organisations to support volunteering. The latest annual total service hour record has exceeded 19 million hours.
