Alice Lai likes to create artworks with the most common and inconspicuous daily objects. She thinks creating art is not only for fun, but also a way to delight others by sharing her work. People who want to share the joy brought by art are invited to Alice Lai's solo exhibition running from today (April 16) to April 29 at the Hong Kong Central Library.
Entitled "Ordinary Game - Works by Alice Nga-Yu Lai", the exhibition is one of the solo exhibitions of "Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme IV" organised by the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held in two stages. The first stage of the exhibition runs from now to April 29 at the Hong Kong Central Library while the second stage will be held from June 19 to 29 at the Promotion Area, L1 of Tsuen Wan Plaza.
Lai graduated from Fine Arts Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2000. She obtained the Hong Kong Arts Development Council - FCO Chevening - University of Leeds Scholarship in 2005 to pursue her Master Degree in Fine Art in the UK. She worked as an art administrator in the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Art in Hospital after graduation.
The exhibition will feature 14 pieces of Lai's work, including "Let Go" and "Along with the Tide". She likes to use different ready-made objects to create her art and turn them into living things, which became the idea of the work "Let Go". To her, creation is like an exciting adventure and the result always comes as a surprise.
Inspired by the ocean, Lai created the "Along with the Tide". She went to Taiwan to visit her family at the end of 2008. Encountering the ocean many times during the journey, she decided to put it in her work after returning home.
The Hong Kong Central Library is located at 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay and is open daily from 10am to 8pm. The Tsuen Wan Plaza is located at 4-30 Tai Pa Street, Tsuen Wan and is open daily from 10am to 10pm. Admission to both exhibition venues is free.
