Proprietor fined for violation of safety rule

     Yuen Hing Steel and Iron Engineering Company was fined $20,000 at Eastern Magistrates¡¦ Court today (April 14) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident which occurred on August 13 last year at an industrial undertaking in Mid-levels. A worker was found lying unconscious at the bottom of a staircase and died two days later.

     According to section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor must provide and maintain a safe system of work that is, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to the health of the persons employed at the industrial undertaking. Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
