******************************************************

Construction works started today (April 10) on the Hong Kong Pavilion for Expo 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo).

On hand to witness the commencement of works were Director, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Affairs, Shanghai, Mr Patrick Chan; Director of the Hong Kong Pavilion, Mr Victor Ng; Chief Project Manager of Architectural Services Department, Miss Chan Hoi-ming; Deputy Director General of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Co-ordination, Mr Huang Jianzhi; and, General Manager (China Operation), Gammon Construction Limited, Mr Patrick Lau.

"The commencement of works ceremony for the Hong Kong Pavilion marks another milestone in Hong Kong's participation in Shanghai Expo," Mr Chan said.

"Publicity and promotions programmes will be arranged in the coming year to raise awareness of the Hong Kong general public about Shanghai Expo and encourage their support and participation."

Mr Chan said an exhibition would be held in the Shanghai Expo Exhibition Centre in July to promote Hong Kong's participation in the Shanghai Expo.

The stand-alone Hong Kong Pavilion, located south of the China Pavilion and adjacent to the Macau Pavilion, will occupy a site of about 600 square metres within the China Pavilion Area in Pudong.

Construction is expected to take about 11 months.

The Pavilion's theme is: "Hong Kong - A City with Unlimited Potential". It will highlight Hong Kong's unique characteristics and showcase the city's creativity as well as connectivity with the Mainland and the world.

The three-level pavilion will have a sleek, contemporary look. The middle level is mostly transparent giving the pavilion a distinctive image that symbolises the infinite imagination and creativity of Hong Kong and its people.

The design of the pavilion is based on the winning entry - the "Pavilion of Infinity" - of a concept design competition held by the Government in 2008.

Apart from the pavilion, Hong Kong will also participate in the Urban Best Practices Area (UBPA) Exhibition under the theme "Smart Card, Smart City, Smart Life".

Hong Kong's UBPA exhibition will demonstrate how the extensive use of smart card technology has improved efficiency and the quality of city life.

Hong Kong will also take part in the Expo Online project by constructing a "virtual" pavilion on the Internet to provide a platform for netizens from around the world to experience the Hong Kong Pavilion and UBPA Exhibition in cyberspace.

The HKSAR Government will also develop its own special Expo 2010 website to promote Hong Kong's participation.

During the six-month Expo period, a range of activities and events promoting Hong Kong will be held, including a "Hong Kong Week" in October 2010.

Shanghai Expo will be held from May 1 to October 31, 2010, under the theme "Better City, Better Life".
