*********************************************************

The Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang today (April 8) urged 93 newly graduated firemen and ambulancemen to live up to the Fire Services Department's (FSD) commitment of providing quality services to the public and at the same time protect the lives of local citizens.

Speaking at the Passing-out Parade at the Fire Services Training School at Pat Heung this morning, Mr Tsang encouraged the graduates to continue to improve themselves in the new position to meet the challenges ahead.

He said that today's ceremony was just the beginning of a new stage for them, "You will have to work very hard to meet the rising expectations from the community that comes with the latest social and technology development."

Mr Tsang said that he was pleased to note that in recent years, FSD had recruited people who were committed to serving the community to be trained as firemen and ambulancemen.

He also noted that FSD had been actively improving its equipment and appliances which included the introduction of new breathing apparatus, replacement of the existing radio system and procurement of new ambulances and fire engines.

Mr Tsang was the reviewing officer at the Passing-out Parade of 17 Station Officers, 39 Firemen and 37 Ambulancemen. The graduates had undergone 26 weeks of stringent training. They will be posted to various fire stations and ambulance depots to continue their on-the-job training to gain field experience.
