The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:
The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (April 7) pursued seven claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for about $156,700 on behalf of 26 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
Defendants Joint Smart Development Limited, Lai Wa Pan Benny trading as Corner Cafe, Kar Poa Motor Service Centre Co Limited and Tung Fung Engineering Company Limited, did not dispute the amounts claimed. The Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $43,196.85, $42,697.20, $35,902.60 and $1,466.42, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other three defendants, Pioneer (Asia) Limited trading as Phoenix Court, Wong Chi Kong Benny trading as Sai Hung Construction & Engineering Co. and Tsang Koon Yat & Yu Tack Foo trading as Sze Hop Loong, did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $28,004.44, $4,316.44 and $1,100, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts awarded at the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The tribunal ordered the respective defendants to pay costs of $231, $240, $232, $60, $336, $160 and $180.
Pioneer (Asia) Limited trading as Phoenix Court pleaded guilty previously at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts to one count of failing to enrol one employee in a MPF scheme and was fined $10,000.
