Appointment of Director-General of Investment Promotion (with photo)

     The Government today (April 3) announced the appointment of Mr Simon Galpin as the Director-General of Investment Promotion, following an open-and-in-service recruitment exercise. Mr Galpin will take up the appointment on April 9.

     In welcoming Mr Galpin's appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue said, ˇ§Mr Galpin possesses extensive knowledge and solid working experience in the area of investment promotion, and has proven management abilities. I have every confidence that he will be able to lead Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) to meet the challenges ahead and serve the community with dedication in his new capacity. I am also confident that the staff of InvestHK will continue to give their best under his leadership.ˇ¨

     Brief biographical notes on Mr Galpin are set out below:

     Aged 47. Mr Galpin has extensive international working experience in economic development and investment promotion, having served in senior positions in a number of organisations in these fields both in the private and public sectors.

     Mr Galpin had worked in a number of private companies responsible for business promotion before joining the Scottish Enterprise, which is the United Kingdom Government's agency to attract direct foreign investment to Scotland, in 1991. During his tenure in Scottish Enterprise, he was involved in investment promotion and other aspects of economic development. He was Head, Asia Pacific when he left the agency in 2001.

     Mr Galpin joined InvestHK in 2001 and was part of the start-up team in establishing the department as one of the world's leading investment promotion agencies. As Associate Director-General, he has been assuming a leading role in shaping InvestHK's strategy and business planning process. Since joining InvestHK, Mr Galpin has participated actively in the activities of various chambers of commerce and business associations and has established an extensive international business network.

     Mr Galpin was educated in the United Kingdom and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Sheffield University Management School, a Master of Science degree from the University of Glasgow and a Master of Law (International Business Law) degree from the University of London.
