An exhibition entitled "The Verve of Light and Shadow: Master Photographers Tchan Fou-li.Kan Hing-fook.Leo KK Wong" will be held from tomorrow (March 29) to October 26 at the Kong Kong Heritage Museum. Through 120 pieces of works by the three master photographers, the exhibition explores the relationship between photography and art, and the spirit of innovation and perseverance of the photographers.
The exhibition was opened today (March 28) by the Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, Mr Li Gang, Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, the three photographers, Mr Tchan Fou-li, Mr Kan Hing-fook, and Dr Leo KK Wong, and the Chief Curator of Heritage Museum, Ms Belinda Wong.
Since its inception in 2000, the Heritage Museum has always embraced one of its key missions: to collect, exhibit and promote Hong Kong photography. In 2001, the museum organised the centennial exhibition "Vision Beyond - Hong Kong Art Photography 1900 – 2000" to provide comprehensive reference of masterpieces by local artists and to salute more than 400 arts photographers who had made the photographic history over the last century. In 2007, the museum presented the "Cameras Inside - out" exhibition to illustrate the technological developments of cameras and its interaction with photographers in the last century.
To further broaden the audiences' vision of Hong Kong photography, and to systematically exhibit a variety of photographic works in its collection, the museum launches the "Hong Kong Photo Series" this year, under which special thematic exhibitions will be staged to showcase the works of iconic local photographers to review the history of photography and explore future trends.
The current exhibition featuring the senior photographers Tchan Fou-ki, Kan Hing-fook, and Leo KK Wong is the inauguration programme of the "Hong Kong Photo Series". This exhibition provides an overview of the budding stages of photography in Hong Kong through the lenses of three senior photographers who are devoted to and still very active in the local photographic scene.
Through the works on display at "The Verve of Light and Shadow: Master Photographers Tchan Fou-li.Kan Hing-fook.Leo KK Wong", the pictorialism, a mainstream movement in the development of Hong Kong photography between 1950s and 1980s, is featured. Influenced by Western photographic art, local pictorialists looked to create painterly effects to express a fine art sensitivity. At the same time, themselves being steeped in Chinese culture, they blended Eastern elements into their works. The result was a unique photographic aesthetic. Active since the heyday of pictorialism, Tchan Fou-li, Kan Hing-fook and Leo K.K. Wong are three pivotal figures in this movement who have contributed outstanding achievements in photographic art and garnered acclaim both in China and overseas.
Located at 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin, the Heritage Museum opens from 10am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays. It is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays). Admission is $10, with a half-price concession for full-time students, people with disabilities and senior citizens aged 60 or above. Admission is free on Wednesdays.
Car parking is available at the Heritage Museum. Those who prefer to use public transport may take the MTR to the Che Kung Temple station, which is within three minutes' walk of the museum.
