Chairman of Committee on Promotion of Civic Education appointed

     The Government today (March 27) announced the appointment of Mr Joseph Lee Chung-tak as Chairman of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE) for a two-year term starting from April 1, 2009.

     A government spokesman said Mr Lee was a dedicated and reputable community leader with significant contributions in youth affairs and other community services. He has served as Chairman of the Commission on Youth (COY) from April 2007 to March 2009 and a CPCE member from April 1997 to March 2000.

     "Mr Lee established the Wofoo Social Enterprises, which is the unified branding for all social services supported by the Wofoo Foundation (a non-profit charitable fund), to achieve social objectives in the delivery of professional and sustainable social services," the spokesman said.

     "With his rich experience and commitment in the promotion of civic matters of various aspects, the CPCE, under Mr Lee's chairmanship, will continue to provide valuable advice to the Government on the overall strategy and specific measures for promoting civic education outside schools in Hong Kong. We envisage the CPCE will establish a closer link with the COY in pursuit of the goal of promotion of civic education to  youth," the spokesman said.

     The spokesman also extended the Government's gratitude to the outgoing chairman, Dr Pang King-chee, for his valuable contributions to the work of the CPCE. Dr Pang has served first as a member and then chairman of the committee since 2001.

     "We have to thank Dr Pang, a veteran in the field of civic education, for devoting so much of his precious time and efforts to the work of the CPCE in the last eight years. Under his steer, the committee has strengthened its work on the promotion of positive civic values targeting young adults and the working population. The committee has provided very useful advice to the Government on the formulation of strategies and plans for promoting the core civic values and corporate citizenship to the Hong Kong community," the spokesman said.

     The Government has also appointed eight new members and re-appointed four serving members for a two-year term starting from April 1. A list of the re-appointed and newly appointed members is as follows:

     The committee also includes representatives from the Home Affairs Bureau, Education Bureau, Information Services Department, Department of Justice, Social Welfare Department, Hong Kong Police Force, Radio Television Hong Kong and Independent Commission Against Corruption.

     The CPCE is a non-statutory advisory body tasked with the promotion of civic education outside schools. It makes recommendations to the Government on the objective and scope of civic education, and their implementation through a range of publicity and educational programmes. It commissions research studies on different aspects of civic education, works in partnership with other non-governmental organisations on specific promotional projects and operates funding schemes to sponsor non-governmental organisations to carry out civic education projects.
