The Government today (March 27) gazetted the United Nations Sanctions (Somalia) Regulation and the United Nations Sanctions (Arms Embargoes)(Amendment) Regulation 2009. The regulation and the amendment regulation came into effect on the same date.
"The regulation implements sanctions against Somalia imposed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 733, as elaborated and amended by UNSC Resolutions 1356, 1425, 1725, 1744 and 1772, and the recently adopted UNSC Resolution 1844. Simultaneous with and as a consequence of the making of the regulation, the amendment regulation was made to remove Somalia from the sanctions regime under the United Nations Sanctions (Arms Embargoes) Regulation,กจ a government spokesman said.
The sanctions under the regulation include:
* prohibition against supply, delivery or carriage of weapons or military equipment to Somalia;
* prohibition against provision of assistance or training related to military activities or to the supply, delivery, manufacture, maintenance or use of weapons and military equipment to certain persons;
* prohibition against making available to, or for the benefit of, certain persons or entities any funds or other financial assets or economic resources; and
* prohibition against entry into or transit through the HKSAR by certain persons.
