Learning music in a fun-filled summer camp and sharing the experience with other budding musicians will give young musicians new inspiration.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Music Office is now inviting applications for participation in the "2009 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp". A well-received annual summer programme, the camp offers young musicians the opportunity to receive training from renowned overseas and Mainland musicians and share the experience with other budding musicians in a scenic and natural environment.
The "2009 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp" will be held from July 26 to August 1 (Camp A) and August 2-8 (Camp B) at the Tso Kung Tam Outdoor Recreation Centre, located at Tai Mo Shan. Qualified local young musicians aged 10 to 25 are welcome to apply. The fee is $900 per person for the seven-day-and-six-night music camp.
Overseas and Mainland young musicians are also welcome to join and stay an extra day for the music camp to have exchanges with local musicians. The camp will be held from July 26 to August 2 (Camp A) and August 2-9 (Camp B). The fee is $1,410 per person for the eight-day-and-seven-night music camp.
Residential campers may choose to join one of the music groups including Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Junior Chinese Orchestra in Camp A, and Youth Choir, Junior String Orchestra and Chinese Orchestra in Camp B.
Day camp at $48 per person per day is also available from July 27-31 and from August 3-7 for organisations, families and any other combinations of individuals to share the music activities such as visits to orchestras, band and choir rehearsals, mini concerts, musical games and various kinds of recreational facilities.
Renowned musicians participating in this year's training programme include Member of China Conductors Association and Resident Conductor of Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, Mr Lei Yu; Member of the Conducting Committee of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society and Artistic Director of the Shenzhen Music Lover National Orchestra, Mr Sun Peng; Conductor of the Taichung County Cultural Centre Chinese Classical Orchestra and Taipei Youth Chinese Orchestra, Mr Chen Ruqi; Director of Wind Studies and Associate Professor of Music at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music in USA, Dr Thomas Verrier; Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Texas and Faculty Member of Interlochen Arts Camp, Dr Martha Walvoord and Music Director of ?rebro Chamber Choir, Sweden and Conductor of World Youth Choir in 1991 and 2005, Mr Fred Sj?berg.
Campers will take part in an intensive orchestral, band or choral training programme conducted by different musicians to enhance musical skills as well as participate in recreational activities at the campsite.
Two concerts will be held in August at the conclusion of the camp to showcase the campers' achievements.
Application forms are available from the Music Office's music centres, or from the website www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. The deadline for applications for the residential camp is April 8 and the deadline for the day camp is May 18.
