Appointments to Employees Retraining Board announced

     The Government today (March 20) announced the appointment of the chairman, vice-chairman and a new member to the Employees Retraining Board.  Its 13 incumbent members have also been re-appointed.  The appointments will take effect from April 1 for a term of two years.  

     Dr Ng Tat-lun and Mrs Agnes Mak Tang Pik-yee will become the chairman and vice-chairman of the Employees Retraining Board respectively.  The newly appointed member is Mr Yu Pang-chun.

     Dr Ng Tat-lun has served as the vice-chairman of the board since 2005.  He has extensive experience in the vocational training and retraining field and was the former Deputy Chairman of the Vocational Training Council for more than 10 years.  

     Mrs Agnes Mak Tang Pik-yee has been serving on the board since 2007 and is also a member of the Social Welfare Advisory Committee and the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications.  

     Mr Yu Pang-chun is a member of the Advisory Committee on Admission of Quality Migrants and Professionals and Business Facilitation Advisory Committee.  He is also the former Chairman of the Hong Kong Retail Management Association.

     The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, welcomed the appointments.  He said, ˇ§With Dr Ngˇ¦s rich knowledge and experience in the operation and services of the board as well as the dedicated support of all members, I am confident that the board will continue to provide comprehensive and quality training and retraining services for our local workers with a view to enhancing their competitiveness and employability, particularly in face of the financial turmoil.ˇ¨

     Mr Cheung paid special tribute to the outgoing chairman, Mr Michael Tien Puk-sun, for his dedicated services to the board for more than a decade.  

     "Mr Tien has served on the board since 1997.  During his term of service, Mr Tien has offered constructive and valuable advice to enhance and diversify the boardˇ¦s training and retraining services to help the local workforce embrace the challenges of economic restructuring.  

     "As the board chairman, he has demonstrated strong leadership and provided useful directions to guide the efficient and effective operation of the board as well as the completion of its strategic review,ˇ¨ he said.

     The Employees Retraining Board is a statutory body established in 1992 under the Employees Retraining Ordinance (Cap. 423).  The board, comprising representatives of employers and employees, persons connected with vocational training and retraining or manpower planning and government officials, is responsible for providing training and retraining courses and related placement services under the Manpower Development Scheme (formerly known as the Employees Retraining Scheme).
