Proprietor fined for violation of safety rule

     Topfar Limited was fined $10,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts today (March 19) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on June 1, 2008, in a container yard at Stonecutters Island, Kwai Chung. A worker was knocked down by a reach stacker.

     According to sections 6A(1), 6A(2)(a) and 6A(3) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor shall provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risk to the health of the person employed.  Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
