Seven employers ordered to pay MPF arrears

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (March 18) obtained one order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at about $98,000 against an employer in the District Court. Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued six claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $140,000 on behalf of 16 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

     The District Court today issued judgment against one employer, Home Fortune International Enterprises Limited trading as Wong Shing Seafood Hot Pot Restaurant. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA the sum of $98,077.92, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 40 employees of the defendant.

     Meanwhile, at the tribunal's hearing today, two defendants, Multi-Group (Global) Limited trading as Multi-Dimension Institute and Wong Ming Hing and Wong Shun Mei formerly trading as Wah Fung Industrial Co, did not dispute the amount claimed. The adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sum of $29,610 and $431.05, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The other four defendants, namely Design East (International) Ltd, New Great Well Property Agency Limited, Keith Cheung & Company Limited and Global Testing & Certification Centre Limited, did not appear at today's hearing. In their absence, the adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $45,740.2, $39,626.64, $21,558.85 and $12,346, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amounts awarded at the District Court and the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay costs of $930. The tribunal ordered the defendants to pay $130, $60, $176, $186, $136 and $155 respectively as the costs in respect of the claims.
