"Oasis.Mirage:Hong Kong International Sculpture Symposium 2009", jointly organised by the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Hong Kong Sculpture Society, will be held from today (March 12) to April 19. A series of activities will be held during the event period and the first is the 11-day sculptural demonstration.
Fourteen sculptors from Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas, inspired by the theme "Oasis.Mirage", will create works with marble, wood and other materials starting from today to March 22 at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade. The finished artworks will be on display at the promenade until April 19.
The artists participating in the demonstrations are Emil Adamec (Czech Republic), Tapiwa Chapo (Zimbabwe), Manit Kantasak (Thailand), Lim Soo Ngee (Singapore), Kabir Ahmed Masum Chisti (Bangladesh), Christopher Rothermel (USA), Tsai Yao Cheng (Taiwan), Yang Xiao Hua (Guangzhou), Shen Yun Qing (Chengdu), Chan Kwok Man (Hong Kong), Lai Yat Fong (Hong Kong), Leung Yiu Wah (Hong Kong), Tai Iat Kuan (Hong Kong), and Ban Zhang (Hong Kong).
More than 20 works by artists from different regions will also be displayed at the promenade from today to April 19.
To enhance public knowledge about sculpting, the Art Promotion Office will organise public tours on March 14, 15, 21 and 22 from 3pm to 4pm at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade. Admission is free and availability is on a first-come-first-served basis. Advance registration is required. For enquiries about the demonstrations, exhibition or the public tours, call 3101 2738.
Other activities related to the sculpture symposium include "Sculpture Development in Hong Kong's Neighbouring Regions" conducted in English by the participating artists of the symposium on March 19 at Hong Kong Central Library, and the guided tours and workshops for students from March 14 to 22 at the promenade.
