Appointments to MPFA

     The Chief Executive has appointed Ms Anna Wu Hung-yuk as the Chairperson of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) for a term of two years starting on March 17, 2009.

     Announcing the appointment today (February 27), the Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang said that Ms Wu has a strong commitment to public service and is widely recognised for her invaluable contributions to various sectors of Hong Kong¡¦s development.  

   ¡§Ms Wu served the MPFA as a non-executive director between 1998 and 2005.  She possesses a deep understanding of the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) system.  With her dedication and rich experience, we are confident that Ms Wu will provide capable leadership to the MPFA in furthering the development of the MPF system for the retirement protection of the working population in Hong Kong,¡¨ Mr Tsang said.

     At the same time, Mr Tsang also expressed his sincere thanks to Mr Henry Fan Hung-ling, the outgoing chairman, for his insightful advice and guidance to the MPFA in steering the development of the MPF system.

     Also announced today were the re-appointments by the Financial Secretary of seven incumbent non-executive directors for a further term of two years starting from March 17, 2009.  They are Mr Leo Kung Lin-cheng, Mrs Angelina Lee Wong Pui-ling, Ms Li Fung-ying, Mr David Sun Tak-kei and Mr Wong Ting-kwong, the Secretary for Labour and Welfare and the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury.

     The Financial Secretary has also appointed Mr Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen and Mr Wong Kwok-kin as new non-executive directors for a term of two years starting from March 17, 2009.  Mr Kenneth Ting Woo-shou and Mr Tam Yiu-chung will step down from the MPFA after serving with dedication for nearly six years.  

   ¡§We would like to thank Mr Kenneth Ting and Mr Tam Yiu-chung for their valuable contributions to the work of the MPFA over the past years¡¨, Mr Tsang said.  

    ¡§We are confident that the MPFA, under the leadership of Ms Wu and the extensive experience and expertise of its other 15 directors, will be able to perform its statutory functions effectively,¡¨ Mr Tsang added.

     As at end December 2008, the MPF system covered more than 2.44 million scheme members. Total net asset values of all MPF approved constituent funds amounted to more than $209.4 billion.

     The MPFA is a statutory body established in September 1998 under the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Ordinance for the regulation and supervision of the MPF system, which is a vital part of the three-pillar approach to retirement support. It is also the Registrar of Occupational Retirement Schemes.
