Two men fined for offences under Banking Ordinance
**************************************************

The District Court today (January 30) fined a 41-year-old and a 40-year-old Indian men $35,000 and $15,000 respectively for offences under the Banking Ordinance.

The District Court heard that a report was made to Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) in August 2006 regarding the unregistered dealing activities engaged by the two defendants being the staff member of a local branch of an overseas bank.

After in-depth investigation, officers of CCB arrested the two defendants. The duo was each convicted of one count of "wilfully altered, abstracted, concealed or destroyed any document of business". The 41-year-old man was also convicted of two counts of "as chief executive of an authorized institution, without reasonable excuse, produced information, which was false in material particular".

Police urged that the provision of false information and wilfully concealment of business documents are criminal offences. Police will continue to work closely with relevant regulators to uphold the law and maintain a safe and stable business environment in Hong Kong.
