Carnivals and lantern displays to celebrate Spring Lantern Festival (with photos)

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold three lantern carnivals in different parts of the territory between February 7 and 9 to celebrate the Spring Lantern Festival.

     A spectacular lantern exhibition is now on show at Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza. Admission to all carnivals and the lantern exhibition is free.

     Lantern carnivals will be held at Sha Tsui Road Playground, Tsuen Wan on February 7, at Tai Po Waterfront Park on February 8 and at Ko Shan Road Park and Ko Shan Theatre on February 9.

     Colourful lanterns are on display at the three venues between February 6-9. Sponsored by Tsuen Wan District Board, a seven-metre high vase-shaped lantern with rose, peony, peach blossom, butterfly and bat decorations stands at Sha Tsui Road Playground symbolising life and energy. Thematic lantern installations "See You There" will light up Tai Po Waterfront Park with lanterns depicting famous scenic spots in Hong Kong including butterfly farm, lotus pond, tulips and Victoria harbour. A giant fish will greet visitors at Ko Shan Road Park while lanterns showcasing Chinese zodiac, rose garden and boisterous dragon will enhance the festive atmosphere at Ko Shan Road Park. Lanterns on the East Asian Games will also be on display at the three carnival venues, wishing the success of the Games.

     Details of the three lantern carnivals are as follows:

1. New Territories West Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
Date and time: February 7 (Saturday), 7.30pm-10.30pm
Venue: Sha Tsui Road Playground, Tsuen Wan
Programmes: Chinese ethnic songs and dance, dance, golden oldies, fortune-telling, games stalls, lantern quiz and roving entertainment

2. New Territories East Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
Date and time: February 8 (Sunday), 7.30pm-10.30pm
Venue: Tai Po Waterfront Park
Programmes: Chinese ethnic songs and dance, lion dance, golden oldies, "Hong Kong-Those were the Days" photo exhibition, fortune-telling, lantern quiz and roving entertainment

3. Urban Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival
Date and time: February 9 (Monday), 7.30pm-10.30pm
Venue: Ko Shan Road Park and Ko Shan Theatre
Programmes: Chinese ethnic songs and dance, lion dance, golden oldies, Chinese acrobatics, Cantonese opera excerpts, fortune-telling, lantern quiz and roving entertainment

     A spectacular lantern exhibition illustrating Louis Cha's romantic legends "Echoes of the Condor Heroes" lights up the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza until March 1.

     The exhibition features the main characters created by Professor Louis Cha (Jin Yong) in his famous and popular novels "The Legends of the Condor Heroes" and "The Return of the Condor Heroes". All of the characters such as Guo Jing, Huang Rong, Yang Guo, Xiaolongnu and other famous characters including the pair of white condors and a big condor are depicted in the form of lanterns. The two novels are linked by the Peach Blossom Island lit by 138 peach blossom lanterns. The production of the lantern displays is accomplished with the endorsement of  Professor Cha and Ming Ho Publications Corporation Limited.
