The Home Affairs Bureau today (January 1) congratulated Hong Kong poet Ms Agnes Lam Shun-ling on winning the Special Mention award in the 24th Nosside International Poetry Prize. With her English poem "Vanilla in the Stars", she has become the first Chinese winner in this competition.
The Nosside International Poetry Prize is the only global poetry contest for unpublished works, multilingual and multimedia, organised by the Centro Studi Bosio of Reggio Calabria and endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Entries for the competition can be written in any language and submitted in the form of written poetry, video poetry or musical poetry.
Ms Lam, born and raised in Hong Kong, is the Associate Professor of the Centre for Applied English Studies of the University of Hong Kong. She studied at the University of Singapore and completed a doctoral degree in linguistics in 1984 at the University of Pittsburgh in America. She regularly contributes poems and articles to journals and publishes anthologies including Water Wood Pure Splendour and Woman to Woman and Other Poems.
