Customs yesterday (December 4) seized $52 million worth of unmanifested electrical products from a departing lorry at Sha Tau Kok Control Point.
Acting on intelligence, Customs officers intercepted a suspicious lorry declared to be carrying DVD machine parts. During an inspection of the lorry yesterday morning, officers uncovered 556 cartons of unmanifested electrical products, including digital cameras, digital video cameras, mobile phones, hard disks and RAMs.
A 40-year-old local male driver was arrested. He is on bail pending further investigations.
Customs is conducting an investigation to track down the mastermind involved.
A spokesman for the Customs and Excise Department said that, with the festive season and the New Year approaching, the department would step up checks at the control points to deter cross-boundary smuggling activities.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
