DanceArt Hong Kong will feature renowned Taiwan choreographer Zhang Xiaoxiong and dancers from Hong Kong and Taipei in "Asunder -Virtual or Real", a performance comprising vignettes of memories, lust and love, in January.
Local dancers Andy Wong, Francis Leung, Yvette Huang, Dever Chan, Victor Fung and Lai Ka-bo will join Taiwan dancers Chu Huang-yi and Lin Yu-ju to search for the black hole of "desire" hidden between virtual and actual light years through the fluidity of bodily movement in the ephemeral photographic effects of light and shadow.
Choreographer Zhang Xiaoxiong was a principal dancer of One Extra Dance Company in Sydney, the Australian Dance Theatre and Vis-a-Vis Dance in Canberra. Zhang was named the Best Male Dancer in Australia in 1989, and has toured in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. He has been active as a dance instructor and choreographer in Australia, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He is the artistic director of Taipei Crossover Dance Company, associate professor at the Department of Dance, Taipei University of the Arts, and guest choreographer at the Helpmann Academy of Performing and Visual Arts in southern Australia. His signature choreography works include "Forgotten God", "Summer Falling Star" and "Curse of Faust".
Founded in 1993, DanceArt Hong Kong received the Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2003 from the Hong Kong Dance Alliance for the series "A Beautiful Life", which addressed social issues through dance. The company has toured on the Mainland, and in Taiwan, Germany and the United States and given performances and workshops at international arts festivals.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, DanceArt Hong Kong's "Asunder - Virtual or Real" contains scenes of nudity. It will be staged at 8pm on January 9 and 10, 2009 (Friday and Saturday), and at 3pm on January 11, 2009 (Sunday), at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $160 and $200 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients are entitled to 50% off (limited quotas for full-time students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
