**********************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) released today (December 1) results of the 2007 Annual Survey of Storage, Communication, Financing, Insurance and Business Services; and the 2007 Annual Survey of Banks, Deposit-taking Companies, Restricted Licence Banks and Representative Offices of Foreign Banks.

According to these two surveys, total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the six industries covered, viz. the storage, communications, financing (except banking), business services, insurance and banking industries, amounted to $1,109.9 billion in 2007, representing a significant increase of 26% over 2006.

Comparing 2007 with 2006, total receipts of the insurance and financing (except banking) industries both rose considerably by 31%, mainly due to the growth in life insurance business and the vibrant stock market respectively in 2007.  Total receipts of the banking industry also increased considerably by 29%, mainly attributable to the growth in non-interest income.  Total receipts of the business services, communications and storage industries increased by 16%, 6% and 3% respectively.

Gross surplus (i.e. total receipts less operating expenses, compensation of employees and value of purchases of goods for sale) of the storage, communications, financing (except banking) and business services industries taken together amounted to $259.7 billion in 2007, representing a considerable increase of 31% over 2006.

Value added of these four industries taken together increased considerably by 36% over 2006 to $220.6 billion.  Within this total, value added of the financing (except banking) increased considerably by 63%, whereas that of business services and communications industries increased by 19% and 6% respectively.  On the other hand, value added of storage industry decreased by 17%.

Owing to the special features of business operations in the insurance and banking industries, gross surplus and value added of these two industries were not compiled.

Principal statistics in respect of the six industries covered by these two surveys are given in the table attached.

The 2007 Annual Survey of Storage, Communication, Financing, Insurance and Business Services was conducted from January to October 2008, while the 2007 Annual Survey of Banks, Deposit-taking Companies, Restricted Licence Banks and Representative Offices of Foreign Banks was conducted from May to October 2008.

More detailed results of these two surveys will be given in the "Report on 2007 Annual Surveys of Storage, Communication, Banking, Financing, Insurance and Business Services".  The C&SD has recently conducted a review on the printing of statistical publications and has decided that the print version of "Report on Annual Surveys of Storage, Communication, Banking, Financing, Insurance and Business Services" will no longer be produced starting from this edition.  Nevertheless, the publication is still available for downloading free of charge from the website of C&SD at (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/statistical_report/index.jsp).
