According to the results of the 2007 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels released today (December 1) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) of restaurants, hotels and boarding houses, retail trade, wholesale trade and import and export trade increased by 22.6%, 11.3%, 9.8%, 3.5% and 1.9% respectively in 2007 as compared with 2006. For all the above industries taken together, total receipts increased by 3.1% in 2007.
In the restaurants industry, total receipts amounted to $87 billion in 2007. Gross surplus, which equals total receipts less total operating expenditure, accounted for 10.7% of total receipts in 2007, higher than that of 5.8% in 2006. Value added of the restaurants industry, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 30.5% over 2006 to $33 billion.
In the hotels and boarding houses industry, total receipts amounted to $26 billion in 2007. Gross surplus accounted for 34.8% of total receipts in 2007, higher than that of 32.8% in 2006. Value added increased by 11.1% over 2006 to $17 billion.
In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $279 billion in 2007. Gross surplus accounted for 7.8% of total receipts in 2007, higher than that of 7.1% in 2006. Value added increased by 15.1% over 2006 to $45 billion.
In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $186 billion in 2007. Gross surplus accounted for 2.7% of total receipts in 2007, lower than that of 3.3% in 2006. Value added decreased by 7.5% compared with that in 2006 to $13 billion.
In the import and export trade, total receipts amounted to $2,916 billion in 2007. Gross surplus accounted for 7.7% of total receipts in 2007, higher than that of 6.7% in 2006. Value added increased by 8.2% over that in 2006 to $340 billion.
The attached table compares selected principal statistics by major industry group between 2006 and 2007.
The survey was conducted from February to October 2008. More detailed survey results will be given in the "Report on 2007 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels".
The C&SD has recently conducted a review on the printing of statistical publications and has decided that the print version of ˇ§Report on Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotelsˇ¨ will no longer be produced starting from this edition. Nevertheless, the publication is still available for downloading free of charge from the website of the C&SD at (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/statistical_ report/index.jsp). Users can download the 2007 edition of the publication as from early January 2009.
