Sand sculpture competition in Southern District
***********************************************

Members of the public are welcome to join the Southern District Sand Sculpture Competition 2008 and Sand Sculpture Exchange Programme to be held at Shek O Beach tomorrow (November 30). While sharing the fun, they can appreciate the sand sculptures of local contestants and a Japanese sand sculpting team.

The competition, organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be held from 1pm to 5pm tomorrow. The contestants will use the sandy beach as a platform for their creativity. Kagoshima Hioki City Team of Japan has been invited for a demonstration and to exchange experience with local sand sculptors.

A total of 92 teams will participate in the competition: 13 teams in the open division, 23 in the family division, 11 in the primary school division, 35 in the secondary school division and 10 in the disabled division. Prizes will be awarded to the winner, first runner-up, second runner-up and third runner-up of each division. All teams will also vie for the overall championship. Adjudication will be based on skill, creativity, relevance to the theme and aesthetics.

Each team may decide the theme of its sculptures and must finish its work in an area of three metres by four metres within two hours. Participants will create their sculptures with the spades and buckets provided. A small amount of natural material such as shells, stones, empty cans and towels may be used as ornaments.

Visitors may enter the sand sculptors' working areas for photo-taking after the panel adjudication. A fun fair with different performances will be held at the beach for people to enjoy.
