Results of the 2007 Annual Survey of Industrial Production

     According to the results of the 2007 Annual Survey of Industrial Production released today (November 28) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the gross output of the manufacturing sector amounted to $164.3 billion in 2007, down by 4.1% from a year earlier.

     The gross surplus of the manufacturing sector decreased by 4.0% from a year earlier to $19.3 billion in 2007.

     The value added of the manufacturing sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kongˇ¦s Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $43.8 billion in 2007, or a decrease of 8.6% from a year earlier.

     Within the manufacturing sector, the five largest broad industry groups in terms of value added in 2007 were (1) paper products, printing and publishing industry; (2) food, beverages and tobacco industry; (3) basic metals, fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment industry; (4) chemical, rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products industry; and (5) textiles (including knitting) industry.  They together accounted for 83.7% of the total value added of the whole sector.

     Comparing 2007 with a year earlier, increases in value added were observed in four broad industry groups, namely the paper products, printing and publishing industry (15.5%); chemical, rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products industry (12.3%); food, beverages and tobacco industry (11.0%); and other miscellaneous manufacturing industries (31.2%).

     On the other hand, the value added of the electrical and electronic products industry decreased by 48.7%; textiles (including knitting) industry by 42.2%; wearing apparel (except knitwear and footwear) industry by 33.5%; and basic metals, fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment industry by 22.0%.

     The attached table shows the principal industrial production statistics by broad industry group.

     The survey was conducted from January to October 2008.  Apart from manufacturing establishments, the survey also enumerated establishments engaged in quarrying; and supply of electricity, gas and water.

     More detailed survey results will be given in the "Report on 2007 Annual Survey of Industrial Production".  The C&SD has recently conducted a review on the printing of statistical publications and has decided that the print version of "Report on Annual Survey of Industrial Production" will no longer be produced starting from this edition.  Nevertheless, the publication is still available for downloading free of charge from the website of C&SD at (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/statistical_report/index.jsp).  Users can download the 2007 edition of the publication as from end December 2008.
