According to the results of the 2007 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services released today (November 18) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the transport sector amounted to $520.1 billion in 2007, representing an increase of 11.2% over 2006.
The value added of the transport sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $112.8 billion in 2007, representing an increase of 7.3% over 2006.
The gross surplus of the transport sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 14.2% compared with a year earlier to $57.8 billion in 2007. The gross surplus accounted for 11.1% of total receipts in 2007.
Within the transport sector, the four largest major industry groups in terms of value added in 2007 were (1) air transport, (2) ocean and coastal water transport, (3) land passenger transport, and (4) services incidental to transport. They together accounted for 87.2% of the total value added of the whole sector.
In the air transport industry, total receipts amounted to $101.3 billion in 2007. Value added increased by 13.3% compared with 2006 to $33.2 billion. Gross surplus was $17.6 billion and accounted for 17.3% of total receipts in 2007.
In the ocean and coastal water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $119.5 billion in 2007. Value added increased by 22.7% from 2006 to $22.5 billion. Gross surplus was $16.2 billion and accounted for 13.6% of total receipts in 2007.
In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $35.3 billion in 2007. Value added increased by 0.6% over 2006 to $22.0 billion. Gross surplus was $8.9 billion and accounted for 25.3% of total receipts in 2007.
In the services incidental to transport industry, total receipts amounted to $230.7 billion in 2007. Value added decreased by 1.3% from 2006 to $20.8 billion. Gross surplus was $8.9 billion and accounted for 3.9% of total receipts in 2007.
The principal statistics for the transport sector, with breakdowns by major industry group in transport and related services, are shown in the attached table.
The survey was conducted from January to October 2008. More detailed survey results will be given in the "Report on 2007 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services". Users can download this survey report (in PDF format) free of charge at the website of C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/index.jsp) as from December 2008. C&SD has recently conducted a review on the printing of statistical publications and has decided that the print version of "Report on Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services" will no longer be produced starting from this edition.
