A former member of the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra will be the guest violinist at the orchestra's 30th anniversary concert next month.
Leung Kin-fung will perform Bruch's masterpiece, "Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor".
Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the "Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra 30th Anniversary Concert" will be held at 3pm on December 6 (Saturday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
Under the batons of the Music Office instructors Ng Ka-ming, Pak Wing-heng and Joseph Kam, 90 current members plus Leung Kin-fung and the Hong Kong Junior Chamber Ensemble will bring to the audience music selected from a remarkable repertoire.
Leung will interpret Bruch's "Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor" with his unique style and excellent technique. Leung was the first Hong Kong musician to win the first prize at the 1992 Young Artist Competition in New York and the second prize at the 19th William Primrose International Viola Competition in 1991. He has been the First Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 2000 and served on the faculty of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Other programme highlights are Tchaikovsky's "Polonaise from 'Eugene Onegin'", Haydn's "Symphony No. 94 in G major, The Surprise" first movement, and Williams's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Suite". The concert will also feature Enesco's "Roumanian Rhapsody No.1, Op.11", Sibelius' "Andante Festivo" and "Karelia Suite".
Since its establishment in 1978, the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra has been providing advanced-level orchestral training for young musicians. Over the past 30 years, many orchestra members have become eminent professionals.
The orchestra has collaborated with many conductors and soloists of international acclaim to join concert tours to France, Israel, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, Australia, Mainland China, the United States and Singapore. These tours not only facilitate international cultural exchange, but also elevate the musical standards and broaden the vision of young musicians.
Tickets priced at $80, $60 and $40 for the concert are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
