A total of 176 orchestras and bands from local primary and secondary schools will participate in the ¡§2008 Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows¡¨ from December 6-28.
Organised annually by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the ¡§Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows¡¨ is to provide a music exchange opportunity for local young musicians and enhance the standard of the participating groups. It includes contests for Chinese Orchestra, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band.
Fifty-eight orchestras will take part in the Chinese Orchestra Contest to be held in three sessions at the Auditorium of Tuen Mun Town Hall on December 6 and 7 (Saturday and Sunday). Zhonghu Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Liu Yang and the Music Office Instructors¡¦ Chinese Ensemble will give guest performances in different sessions of the contest.
The String Orchestra Contest with 28 orchestras will be staged at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong City Hall on December 7 (Sunday). Violinists of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Eiko Hosaka and Tsai Loo and the Hong Kong Youth Strings will be guest performers.
The Symphony Orchestra Contest with 22 orchestras will be held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on December 13 (Saturday) in two sessions. Hong Kong Piano Trio will be the guest performer.
Sixty-eight bands will compete in the Symphonic Band Contest in five classes at the Ko Shan Theatre on December 13 and 14 (Saturday and Sunday), and at the Auditorium of the Tsuen Wan Town Hall on December 27 (Saturday). The Gold Award winners of each class will vie for respective ¡§Grand Champion¡¨ titles in the primary and secondary school categories at the Winners¡¦ Final on December 28 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of the Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Polish Trombonist Maciek Walicki and the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band will be the guest performers at the final.
Tickets priced at $30 for all the contests are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
