Secretary for the Environment starts Australia visit (with photos)

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, today (November 10) began a round of visits in Australia.

     He started the day with a meeting with Sydneyˇ¦s Deputy Lord Mayor Marcelle Hoff and Chief Executive Officer of the City of Sydney Ms Monica Barone to learn about the cityˇ¦s carbon neutral strategy through energy efficiency, renewable energy and offsets.

     They had a fruitful discussion on the initiatives taken by both sides to protect the environment. Mr Yau also briefed them on efforts to improve the air quality in Hong Kong.

     In the afternoon, Mr Yau met the Deputy Director-General, NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change Mr Simon Smith to exchange views on ways to minimise the impact of climate change as well as promote sustainable development, resource use and waste management.

     On a tour of NSW Parliament House, Mr Yau was told that it had embarked on a major project to reduce energy and water consumption.

     Before departure, Mr Yau met the Australian and local Chinese media to brief them on Hong Kong's measures to improve the environment.

     Mr Yau will leave for Canberra this evening.
