     The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, today (November 7) witnessed the signing of a letter of intent on construction of the Sichuan-Hong Kong Rehabilitation Centre and a set of memoranda on four other medical and education institutions funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).

     Mr Tang said the Sichuan-Hong Kong Rehabilitation Centre was one of the first 20 projects to be funded by the Trust Fund in Support of the Reconstruction in the Sichuan Earthquake Stricken Areas.

     As well as offering medical care to the disabled, the centre would also be the base for Sichuan’s rehabilitation network and the training ground for professionals.

     The centre, with 300 beds, is attached to Sichuan Province People’s Hospital. It will provide wide-ranging rehabilitation services including orthopaedics and traumatology, physiotherapy and occupational care, and clinical psychological counselling.

     The four reconstruction projects on medical and educational services funded by the HKJC comprise the reconstruction and expansion of rehabilitation facilities at Mianyang 3rd City Hospital; the reconstruction of the Mianyang Youxian Zhongxing Junior Middle School; the construction of new buildings at Deyang No 5 Middle School; and the expansion of the Dujiangyan School to become an Olympic School.

     Mr Tang said building an Olympic School in Dujiangyan would help nurture Sichuan’s sports talent. “ It is a great idea, and I am grateful to the HKJC for joining hands with the Government to contribute to the reconstruction of Sichuan.”

     Mr Tang also met the Governor of Sichuan, Mr Jiang Jufeng, to understand the progress on the reconstruction work. He assured the Governor that the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong people would continue to render full support to the reconstruction.

     Mr Tang said, “I am pleased that the Sichuan Party Secretary, Mr Liu Qibao, will lead a delegation to Hong Kong next Monday and Tuesday. The delegation will introduce the post-quake reconstruction work and  meet people from various sectors of the Hong Kong community.  On behalf of the HKSARG, I wish the delegation every success in their coming visit.”

     Mr Tang returned to Hong Kong from Sichuan today.
