Peking opera virtuosi to perform masterpieces in January

     The Peking Opera Theatre of Beijing and opera virtuosi including outstanding exponents of the Mei Lanfang School will perform Peking Opera Classics in January 2009.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the shows will feature numerous awarding-winning Peking Opera virtuosi who are National Class One Performers.

     They include Zhang Xuejin, a disciple of Ma Lianliang, the master of laosheng (old male) roles in Peking Opera; Li Yufu, a disciple of Mei Lanfang; Li Changchun, who specialises in ¡§hualian¡¨ (painted face) roles of the Qiu (Shengrong) stylistic school; Li Mingyan, a fine exponent of Li¡¦s stylistic school of interpreting ¡§laodan¡¨ (old female) roles; Ye Jinyuan, a virtuoso Peking Opera artist; Huang Dehua, a disciple of Sun Shengwu in ¡§chou¡¨ (comic) roles; Li Hongtu, a disciple of Ye Shaolan in ¡§xiaosheng¡¨ (young civil male) roles; Dong Yuanyuan, a disciple of Mei Baojiu and the son of Mei Lanfang; Zhu Qiang, an exponent of the Ma (Lianliang) stylistic school in ¡§laosheng¡¨ (old male) roles; Chen Junjie, an outstanding artist of the Qiu (Shengrong) stylistic school of hualian (painted face) roles; Huang Yanzhong, a renowned performer specialising in ¡§hualian¡¨ (painted face) roles; Shang Wei, a disciple of Mei Baojiu; and Huang Baixue, a famous artist specialising in ¡§wenchou¡¨ (civil comic) roles.

     Performances will be at 7.30pm at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $350, $240, $180 and $100 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens aged 60 or over, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients.
