Tying in with two Cantonese opera performances under the "New York Celebrates Hong Kong 2008", and offering a deeper look at the Cantonese opera art form, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York arranged for Cantonese opera veteran Danny Li and performer Pui-Yan Li to host a Cantonese opera workshop today (October 13, New York time).
Cantonese opera is a fine art that includes fluid and graceful body movement and expressions. The dramatic tension in any performance can be felt from the elaborate and flamboyant costumes, exquisite wigs and colourful make-up worn by the actors. This workshop allowed the audience to get fully immersed in Cantonese opera. They were introduced to its symbolism, connotations, costumes, movements and sign language. The audience also saw the weapons used in various operas.
Today's workshop attracted more than 100 people from different sectors who were interested in the art form of Cantonese opera.
The festival, which began on October 1 and organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York, is a month-long celebration to showcase the evolving "modern heritage" of the continuously vibrant and transformation city of Hong Kong through art exhibits, performances and workshops.
Other upcoming events include an international symposium at the Skyscraper Museum examining the dramatic vertical urbanism of Hong Kong, a modern dance performance by the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company, a discussion by designer Eric Chan and architect/designer Calvin Tsao on design in a global environment, and a Hong Kong cuisine tasting event.
